They say it has got to get messy before it gets better and kitchen renovations are no exception. It’s day 3 of the renovations and things thankfully are trucking right along. We still have our sink as of this afternoon but the contractor gave the head’s up that it will be coming out tomorrow. One more day that we don’t have to use our itty bitty sink in the powder room. YEAH!!!! Check out the progress so far …
Three Days Into our Kitchen Transformation
Work was done on the electrical outlets, fan and light switches. Three ceiling pot lights are in the works once the cabinets go in. Lighting is so very important when designing your kitchen. You want to highlight the prep areas and also make sure they are centered in the correct location over the countertop and cabinets below. The pot lights are both functional and for ambiance when it’s dark. The way the light falls on the counters will create a nice effect when all the other lights are off.

There was a empty bulk head space above the sink that was exposed (it’s filled in now check out the first photo) when the contractor took down the upper cupboards. I did have a idea that we could put up some large can pot lights up in that space, but reconsidered. After a second look it’s not a good idea as the light would be one sided and only emphasize the left hand side of the kitchen work area. It would look funny so I stuck with the original lighting plan of three lights centered in between the two windows.

You can start to see now how the ceiling is being shaped to the curve of the ceiling from the other side of the kitchen. What the pictures don’t show, is that in-between the two areas the ceiling height is different. Not a good look lol. Luckily with this new small piece of overhead you won’t be able to notice. I like that the contractor has angled it on the left to mirror the curve of the ceiling by the basement door.

Another great option for electrical outlets are the new USB/electrical outlets that are available. Not a lot of work for your electrician and they are so handy for the iPhones/smart phones in your house. Its small details that go along way. Check out a couple of options here…
One last detail about the outlets I want to pass along is get your electrician to put the electrical boxes on their sides. It’s a really nice feature when all is said and done. Here’s a example with one on its side … Just a cleaner look when you plug things in.

Takeaway Tip: When your electrician is doing the electrical work;
Don't forget about DIMMER SWITCHES. Dimmer's are your best friend with lighting.
