Before / After: A basement bedroom Makeover

Who doesn’t like a dramatic before and after pictures!!  Huge difference in this bedroom makeover.   Now a soft calming colour scheme and plenty of functional furniture for this animal and nature loving client!

When you decide that you want your space to be more and not sure how to get there. Here’s a great example of how one clients basement bedroom (which doesn’t feel like a basement by the way) was transformed by paint, furniture and layering a soft palette of ivory, green and natural materials to give her room a more calming, sophisticated grown up feel she was looking for. All the items reflect her style and personality with a nature theme that she can take with her when and if she moves to a new place. Check out the before and after’s to see how this room was transformed.

Start with a floor plan. Although this room’s floor plan didn’t change a lot, the specific area where redined for more specific usage. The bed location stayed the same because of the posts in the middle of the room could not be changed so we had to stay within those constraints but on either side of the bed the layout was definitely enhanced. A more defined dressing area on the right and a side board/night stand on the left.

Painting the walls and ceiling the same colour visually makes the space feel bigger.

One of the things I like doing is concealing as best I can the big black look of a TV in a room. Changing the location of the tv to the brick wall, covering the shelf and painting the brick a gorgeous green colour the TV now blends right in. The open wardrobe was moved to the same wall as the brick wall and covered in black drapery to blend visually with the black tv.

Make your room features work for you; brick wall is now extra seating. Using pillows on the bottom created extra seating where there was none before.

The clients dresser is a beautiful piece was hidden before and switching the location brought more space for a little dressing area. The wardrobe now on the back wall is still functional, draped in black fabric the client already had and blends easily so the TV and wardrobe fit all together on the back wall.

Hook is still there for the heavy bag if the client wants to hang it up but now this back corner is a perfect little oasis for reading, music, chilling or company. Of course the art is a perfect reminder to ‘Inhale Exhale’ 🙂

Haha first visitor, family pet approved!

Unused space now becomes storage and bedside table. Also a great piece that will be versatile for future apartments. Can be a dresser in a bedroom, used in a hallway. Can be a dinning room piece. Lots of options for future placement wherever the client lives.

The soft colour palette makes the room more restful and easy on the eyes. The rugs define the zones better even in a small room.

Black out curtains add to the nature theme with the tree’s and birds.

Use rugs to define your spaces. This cowhide rug (faux) with sheepskin rug make it soft and cozy on the feet. Soft blend of colours makes it easy on the eyes and restful when you look at the whole space together.

Takeaway Tip: Use furniture that can be multi purpose, and suit a variety of rooms in your house. A dresser becomes a sideboard in a dinning room or a hallway piece for keys and mail.
