Fix it Friday: How to add a antique dresser to a already full kids room

Have you inherited a family piece of furniture when you have no more room in your house?  Something has to give; right? lol  You either decline or make room for it.  In our case it was a treasured piece and I wanted it for our son’s room.   Receiving a new piece either by way of a hand me down, or pick up from a second hand store or someone gives you piece of furniture out of the goodness of their heart; put it to good use where it can be utilized the most.    Here’s where it landed … {photo is a little dark I know but check out the back corner 🙂 }

Let me share with you one way to reorganize and revamp a kids room to do just that.   First off let me say there’s always one or more ways to arrange a room.   As you kids grows so can the room.   Since he didn’t have a dresser before and only hanging fabric shelves in his closet it was much needed and greatly appreciated.

Here’s his closet ‘Before’ and you can see the hanging shelf served a purpose at the time but it was falling apart and needed an update.

The Antique Dresser …. loving the finish, the look, the height and the six drawers … Now where’s it going to go?  I thought of the closet but not the best option I found.  It would be better off in his room.  Looking around his room I could relocate his old desk and replace it with his new dresser.  First though had to reorganize his closet.

And as luck would have it the furniture gods were in my favour.  I took the old bookcase on the floor and propped it up on the top shelf and guess what it fit perfectly.  Great for him as he gets taller and the cubbies work well to use and store items that are easy to change up.

‘After’

First I moved the bookcase up top { woohoo it fits perfectly, who would have thunk}  great use of vertical space otherwise wasted.  Second I moved his other desk from his room into this space.  {measured first of course and it fit}    He still has room for hanging shirts and down below the desk drawer it a great spot for all his soccer clothes in one location.  Underneath he can still have his laundry basket and much more room for shoes underneath.   Love when things work out.     Here’s where the old desk was and then replaced with his new dresser.    Mom’s a happy camper and he now has a proper dresser.

Final landing spot which works so well in the room.  In my case this dresser came from my grandmother.   She always had great furniture and I remember this piece in her hallway when we visited from out of town.  After she passed things were divided up throughout the family and I was lucky enough to have inherited this antique dresser.  Even though our son is young this is a piece that can grow with him … not that he cares because he’s a kid but for us it means something that he has a little piece of history from his Great Grandmother 🙂

TAKEAWAY TIP:   Measure first when your thinking of moving furniture around.  No sense lifting and moving a piece of furniture to a different location if it's not going to fit.
